Frequently asked questions

What does the mass air flow sensor do?
The mass air flow sensor measures the mass of air drawn into the engine and reports it to the engine control module. It sits in the intake ducting just after the air cleaner and before the throttle body, and its signal underpins the base fuelling and ignition calculations.
What are the symptoms of a faulty MAF sensor?
A contaminated or drifting MAF sensor commonly shows as poor idle quality, hesitation, reduced power or raised fuel consumption, often before a fault code is stored. These symptoms appear because the control module is fuelling from an inaccurate air-mass reading.
Which Land Rover models use this MAF sensor?
This MAF sensor fits petrol Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Freelander 2, Range Rover L322 and Range Rover Sport L320. Applications include the 4.0 Cologne V6, 4.4 AJ V8, 4.2 supercharged V8 and 3.2 inline-six petrol. It's for petrol engines only, so confirm your engine before ordering.
How should the MAF sensor be handled during fitting?
Handle the MAF sensor by its housing only, as the sensing element is fragile. Don't try to clean the element with solvent, since that typically damages it. Make sure the air cleaner element is clean on fitting, as a dirty filter shortens sensor life.
