What is the brake servo and what does it do?
This brake servo is the vacuum booster on the Freelander 1, mounted on the bulkhead between the brake pedal and the master cylinder. It multiplies the driver's pedal effort so full braking pressure is reached with moderate pedal force.

The servo uses the pressure difference across an internal diaphragm, with vacuum drawn from the inlet manifold on petrol engines and from a dedicated vacuum pump on diesels. That difference boosts pedal force before it reaches the master cylinder pushrod.

A failed servo typically gives a hard pedal with poor braking, a hiss from the bulkhead as the pedal is pressed, or an unstable idle where a split diaphragm draws air into the intake. The servo is supplied as a complete unit; the master cylinder is separate.
