Frequently asked questions

What does the fuel cut-off switch do?
The fuel cut-off switch is an inertia-operated safety switch wired into the fuel pump supply. In normal use it stays closed and passes current to the pump. A sharp impact trips it open, cutting power to the pump so fuel stops flowing after a collision.
When does the fuel cut-off switch trip?
The fuel cut-off switch trips when it senses a sudden deceleration or impact, such as in a collision. Once tripped it cuts the fuel pump feed. Many switches have a reset button on top that you press to restore power once it's safe.
What are the signs of a faulty fuel cut-off switch?
A faulty fuel cut-off switch typically causes a no-start with a dead fuel pump, or intermittent cut-outs if it trips over bumps. Checking for power through the switch confirms whether it has tripped or failed. Reset it before assuming it's faulty.
