The RTC1958 selector fork locates in the groove of the 3rd/4th synchroniser hub sleeve and slides it along the mainshaft to engage third and fourth gears. It works in the manual gearbox selection mechanism on Land Rover Series 1, 2 and 3 models.
Where does the selector fork sit in the gearbox?
The selector fork sits inside the Series manual gearbox, straddling the 3rd/4th synchroniser hub sleeve and riding on its own selector rail. When you move the lever into third or fourth, the rail pushes the fork to slide the synchro sleeve into mesh.
Why do selector forks wear out on Series gearboxes?
Selector forks typically wear on the pads that contact the synchro sleeve, usually from high mileage or steady pressure on the lever. A worn 3rd/4th fork can let a Series gearbox jump out of gear or select third and fourth poorly. Inspect it whenever the box is stripped.
