What is the 556147 stud used for?
The 556147 is a 5/16in BSF stud for the bell housing joint between the engine and gearbox on Land Rover Series 2 and 3. It screws into a tapped boss to give a fixed thread for clamping the housing, and a nut tightens onto its outer end.
Why is the stud serrated?
The stud is serrated beneath the shoulder so it bites and locks against rotation as the retaining nut is tightened. That stops the stud spinning in its boss when you torque or later undo the nut. The 5/16in BSF thread is the British Standard Fine size used here.
How many bell housing studs are typically needed?
The bell housing is clamped by several studs and bolts around its flange, so most jobs need more than one. Order the quantity your housing uses, and renew any with stripped threads or rounded serrations. A stud that no longer locks can spin in the boss.
