De brandstofafscheider is een water- en sedimentafscheider in de dieseltanktoevoerleiding, stroomopwaarts van het brandstoffilter en de injectiepomp geïnstalleerd.

Brandstof stroomt langzaam door het systeem, zodat water en zwaardere deeltjes door de zwaartekracht in de opvangbak bezinken. Dit beschermt het filter en de injectie-apparatuur tegen slijtage en corrosie veroorzaakt door verontreinigde brandstof. Voor dieselmotoren van vóór de Td5-serie wordt het opgehoopte water periodiek afgetapt.
