What is the Layshaft used for?
The Layshaft, or countershaft, sits parallel to the mainshaft inside the Series Land Rover gearbox. It's driven constantly by the input shaft and carries a fixed gear cluster that meshes with the mainshaft's sliding gears to provide the gearbox ratios. Fitted to Series I, II and IIA models.
Where does the layshaft sit in the gearbox?
The layshaft runs along the bottom of the gearbox casing, parallel to the mainshaft, on Series Land Rover models. Its gear cluster stays in constant mesh with the input gear and transfers drive up to the mainshaft gears. Access needs the gearbox removed and split.
What are the signs the layshaft needs replacing?
Replace the layshaft if its gear teeth are chipped, worn or whining, or if the layshaft bearings have failed, common on high-mileage Series gearboxes. Symptoms include noise in gear, jumping out of gear and metal debris in the oil. Worn layshaft gears degrade every ratio.
How do I confirm this layshaft fits my Series gearbox?
