What is the conrod bearing set and what does it do?

The conrod bearing set is the replaceable big-end shell bearings that sit between the connecting rods and crankshaft journals on the Rover V8 petrol engine. They form the running surface through which the rods drive the crank. Supplied in standard size for original, unmachined crankpins.

Which V8 engines does it fit?

It fits the 3.5, 3.9 and 4.2 litre Rover V8 in the Land Rover Defender, Discovery 1 (3.5 and 3.9), Range Rover Classic and Series V8. It does not suit the later 4.0 or 4.6 cross-drilled blocks. Confirm your engine size before ordering.

What's the difference between standard and undersize bearings?

This set is standard size, for a crankshaft still at its original crankpin diameters. If the crank has been reground undersize, you'll need the matching undersize bearing set instead, not this one. Check the crank before ordering.

When should the big-end bearings be replaced?

Renew the big-end bearings if you find big-end knock, bearing wear or low oil pressure. They wear from age, high mileage and oil starvation. They're normally replaced as a set during an engine rebuild, not individually.
