What is this track rod end used for?

This track rod end is the ball joint at the drag link position in the steering linkage, connecting the linkage to the steering relay or arm. The tapered pin locates in the arm eye and the shank screws into the rod tube. This is the left-hand thread version for Land Rover Series III.

Why does it matter that this is a left-hand thread?

The left-hand thread lets the rod be adjusted for tracking by turning it, with one left-hand and one right-hand end per rod. Fit a left-hand thread end only where a left-hand thread is called for, or it won't screw in. Check the thread direction on the end you're replacing.
