What is the shock absorber boot for?
The shock absorber boot sheaths the exposed damper piston rod on the strut, shielding it from grit, moisture and road debris. It fits the Discovery Sport (2015+), Freelander 2 (2006-2014) and Range Rover Evoque (2012-2018 and 2019+). Protecting the rod preserves the damper seal and extends damper life.
Where does the boot fit on the vehicle?
The boot fits over the suspension strut, covering the damper piston rod. On the Freelander 2 it is typically used on the front strut and rear shock absorber, and on the Discovery Sport and Evoque it sits on the front strut. It is usually renewed when the damper is replaced.
Should I replace the boot when changing the shock absorber?
Replace the boot whenever the shock absorber or strut is renewed. A split or perished boot lets grit reach the piston rod, which typically wears the damper seal and shortens its life. A fresh boot protects the new unit on the Discovery Sport or Evoque.
