What does the valve stem seal do?
The valve stem seal seals around the valve stem where it passes through the valve guide, controlling how much oil enters the port and combustion chamber on the cylinder head. It fits diesel Ingenium engines, the 2.0-litre AJ200/AJ20D4/AJ21D4 and 3.0-litre AJ20D6, across the Defender 2020+, Discovery 5, Range Rover L405, L460 and Range Rover Sport L461.
How many valve stem seals are needed?
You need one valve stem seal per valve, so a complete head takes a full set. The count depends on whether your engine is the 2.0-litre four-cylinder or 3.0-litre AJ20D6 diesel. Replace them all as a set when the head is off rather than individually.
What are the signs of worn valve stem seals?
Worn valve stem seals typically cause blue smoke on start-up or under load as oil seeps past the guide into the combustion chamber. On these diesel Ingenium engines it can also raise oil consumption. Seals are usually renewed as a set during head work.
