Frequently asked questions

What is the LR079503LR CV boot kit for?
LR079503LR is the constant velocity joint boot kit for the rear axle driveshafts. It's listed for the Discovery 5, New Defender L663, Range Rover L405 and L460, and Range Rover Sport L494 and L461. The boot is the rubber bellows that seals grease into the CV joint.
Is this for the front or rear driveshafts?
This kit is for the rear axle driveshafts. Front driveshaft boots on the Discovery 5, New Defender L663 and Range Rover L460 are a separate part, so confirm which end you're working on before ordering.
Why do CV boots split?
CV boots split because the rubber hardens with age and heat cycling, then cracks as the joint articulates. Road debris and grit thrown up at the rear axle typically speed it up. Once split, the boot flings grease out and lets water and dirt into the joint.
Can I just replace the boot, or does the whole driveshaft need changing?
Replacing the boot alone works if the split is caught early and the joint still feels tight with no grinding. If the boot has been open long enough for water and grit to get in, the CV joint itself is usually worn and the driveshaft needs replacing on the Discovery 5 or Range Rover L405.
How difficult is a CV boot replacement?
It's fiddly rather than hard. The driveshaft typically has to come off the vehicle so the boot can slide over the joint, and the joint needs cleaning and repacking with grease. Most workshops fit boots with the shaft on the bench.
