Frequently asked questions

What does the DA4979 ball joint separator do?
The DA4979 is a heavy-duty scissor-type hand tool that eases tapered ball joints and track rod ends apart without hammering. Turning the screw draws the jaws together to press the joint out of its taper, which avoids the impact damage a hammer or fork can cause to the joint and its boot.
What size joints does the DA4979 separator fit?
The DA4979 has a jaw opening spanning roughly 31mm inner to 52mm outer, suiting the ball joints and track rod ends found across many Land Rover front suspension and steering setups. Check your joint against the jaw range, as very large or very small joints may need a different puller.
Why use a ball joint separator instead of a hammer?
A separator like the DA4979 presses the tapered joint apart gradually, so you avoid the shock damage that hammering can cause to the joint, boot and surrounding parts. It's forged from heat-treated carbon steel to take the load, making it a reusable workshop tool rather than a one-time fix.
