Frequently asked questions

What is the 0.005in differential shim for?
The 0.005 inch differential shim sits inside the rear Salisbury differential bearing assembly on the Defender. It sets bearing preload and crown wheel and pinion position, taking up clearance to reach the correct backlash and running tolerance when the differential is assembled or overhauled.
Which Defender axle does this shim fit?
This shim fits the Defender 110 and 130 rear axle with the 4-pin Salisbury differential, built 1987 to 2006 with manual transmission. It does not apply to the 90, which uses a different rear axle. Shims are selected by thickness during setup, so confirm the size you need.
How is the differential shim selected?
Differential shims are selected by measurement during assembly, not fitted to a fixed count. This is the 0.005 inch size in the range; you fit the combination that gives the specified backlash and bearing preload on the Salisbury axle. It is a setup part for a differential rebuild.
