Frequently asked questions

What is the Steering Valve Ring used for?
The Steering Valve Ring is a PTFE seal inside the rotary valve of the Adwest power steering box. It seals between the pressure lands of the valve spool, separating the high-pressure feed from the return. It's used on the Defender up to 2016, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
Where does the valve ring sit on the vehicle?
This ring sits inside the steering box itself, within the rotary control valve that directs hydraulic pressure to assist the steering. It's an internal sealing part, not an external fitting, so reaching it means opening the Adwest valve assembly.
What are the signs this power steering seal needs replacing?
The PTFE valve ring typically hardens or wears with age, letting fluid bypass internally. Signs usually include heavy or uneven power steering, a whine, or loss of assistance. On the Adwest box fitted to the Defender and Range Rover Classic, worn valve seals are a common cause of poor assistance.
