Frequently asked questions

What does the cam cover gasket do?
The cam cover gasket seals the joint between the camshaft cover and the cylinder head, stopping engine oil escaping at the top of the engine and keeping dirt out of the valvetrain. This is the right-hand cylinder bank gasket, supplied by Payen in a paper-type material.
Do I need the left-hand gasket as well?
This gasket seals the right-hand cylinder bank only. V-configuration engines have a separate camshaft cover and gasket for each bank, so if you are resealing both sides you will typically also need the left-hand cam cover gasket. Confirm which bank is leaking before ordering.
What are the signs the cam cover gasket needs replacing?
Common signs are oil seepage or leaks around the top edge of the camshaft cover, often leaving oil down the side of the engine or on the exhaust. The paper gasket can harden and shrink with age and heat, so it is usually renewed whenever the cam cover is removed.
