Frequently asked questions

What does the crankshaft timing chain sprocket do on a Rover V8?
The crankshaft timing chain sprocket sits on the nose of the crankshaft and drives the timing chain up to the camshaft sprocket. It holds the fixed timing relationship between crank and cam that controls valve and ignition timing on the Rover V8 petrol engine.
Which Land Rover engines use this timing chain sprocket?
It fits the Rover V8 petrol engine in the Defender, Series 2 and 3, Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover Classic and Range Rover P38. It's the crank-nose sprocket for the 3.5, 3.9, 4.0 and 4.6 V8 units.
Should the sprocket be replaced along with the timing chain?
Typically yes. The crank sprocket, chain and camshaft sprocket wear together, so most workshops renew them as a set. Fitting a new chain to a worn sprocket usually causes rapid wear and timing rattle on the V8.
What are the signs this sprocket needs replacing?
Hooked or worn sprocket teeth, a rattling timing chain on start-up, or chain slap usually point to wear in the timing drive. Left unchecked, a worn sprocket lets the chain jump and throws out valve timing on the Rover V8.
