What is the Td5 timing belt tensioner and what does it do?

The timing belt tensioner is the pulley that bears against the timing belt on the 2.5L Td5 5-cylinder turbo diesel. It keeps the correct running tension between the crankshaft drive sprocket and the camshaft sprocket, which holds the cam timing accurate while the engine runs.

Should the tensioner be replaced with the timing belt?
