Frequently asked questions

What does the ETC5740 exhaust valve do?
The ETC5740 exhaust valve opens on the exhaust stroke to release spent combustion gases into the exhaust port, then seals against its seat during compression and combustion. It fits the 2.5L 4-cylinder NA and turbo diesel engines in the Land Rover Defender up to 2016.
How many exhaust valves are needed for a head rebuild?
Typically four exhaust valves are needed for a complete 2.5L diesel head, one per cylinder. The ETC5740 is sold individually, so order to suit your rebuild.
What are the signs an exhaust valve needs replacing?
Signs include loss of compression, poor starting and burnt or pitted valve faces found during a head strip. Exhaust valves run hotter than inlets and typically wear at the seat face, so they're usually renewed as a set during a head overhaul.
