Frequently asked questions

What does the ETC8751 turbocharger do on a 200TDi Defender?
The ETC8751 turbocharger forces induction on the 2.5L 200TDi four-cylinder diesel engine fitted to the Land Rover Defender. Exhaust gas spins the turbine, which drives a compressor wheel on the same shaft to pack denser air into the intake manifold, raising torque and efficiency. It mounts at the exhaust manifold.
Why do 200TDi turbochargers fail, and what are the signs?
A 200TDi turbocharger typically fails from worn centre bearings, oil starvation, or a cracked turbine housing. Signs usually include blue or black smoke, a whining or whistling noise, loss of power, or oil in the intake. The centre housing relies on clean pressurised engine oil, so oil condition matters.
What should I check when fitting the turbocharger?
When fitting the ETC8751 turbo to a 200TDi, it's typically important to prime the centre bearing with clean engine oil and fit a new oil feed pipe and gaskets before starting. Check the intake for debris from any previous failure. This is usually a specialist or experienced DIY job, so follow the workshop manual.
