Frequently asked questions

What does the LT85 mainshaft spacer do?
The mainshaft spacer locates on the mainshaft of the LT85 five-speed manual gearbox, fitted to V8 Defenders, and sets the axial position of the mainshaft gears. It controls end-float as the gear train is built up, keeping the gears correctly positioned during assembly.
How many mainshaft spacers are needed for an LT85 rebuild?
Typically one spacer is needed at this position on the mainshaft per LT85 gearbox. It's an assembly component, so it's usually only replaced when the gearbox is stripped for a rebuild and the mainshaft gears are being reset.
Is fitting the LT85 mainshaft spacer a DIY job?
Fitting the mainshaft spacer is a specialist gearbox task, not a roadside job. It sits inside the LT85 five-speed casing, so the gearbox has to be removed and split. Setting mainshaft end-float correctly usually needs workshop measuring tools during the rebuild.
