Hoofdas van de versnellingsbak is de centrale uitgaande as van de handgeschakelde LT77 5-versnellingsbak, die over de volledige lengte van de transmissie loopt, van de ingang tot de uitgangsflens.

De hoofdas draagt de snelheidsversnellingen, synchro naven en bijbehorende lagers die samen het schakelmechanisme vormen.
