Frequently asked questions

What does the KAM539 crown wheel and pinion set do?
This is the final drive stage inside the differential housing, with a 3.8:1 ratio for use on either the front or rear axle. The pinion is driven by the propshaft and turns the crown wheel, transmitting drive through 90 degrees to the differential carrier and on to the halfshafts.
Why does front and rear need to run the same crown wheel and pinion ratio?
Because the front and rear axles are mechanically linked through the transfer box in four-wheel drive, a ratio mismatch between axles causes drivetrain wind-up and accelerated wear. Always fit the same ratio front and rear, which is why KAM539 is supplied for either position at 3.8:1.
Does the crown wheel and pinion need setting up on installation?
Yes. The set is lapped together as a matched pair and must be fitted as a unit, with pinion depth, bearing preload, and backlash set during installation rather than reused from the old components.
Which vehicles take the KAM539 3.8:1 crown wheel and pinion?
Fits all Defenders (90 rear axle), Discovery 1 (1989-1998), Discovery 2 (1998-2004), and Range Rover Classic (1970-1994) rear axle at the 3.8:1 ratio. The set itself is designed for use in either the front or rear differential housing.
