Frequently asked questions

What is the vacuum pump and what does it do?
This is the engine-driven vacuum pump for the 2.2 Td4/TDCi Defender, mounted on the cylinder head and driven from the camshaft. A diesel makes no usable manifold vacuum, so this pump supplies the vacuum for the brake servo and the engine's vacuum-operated actuators.
Which vehicle and engine does it fit?
This vacuum pump fits the Land Rover Defender from 2007 (Puma) with the 2.2-litre Td4/TDCi diesel only. It doesn't fit the earlier 2.4 Puma or the Td5 engines, so confirm your engine is the 2.2 before ordering.
What are the symptoms of a failing vacuum pump?
A worn or leaking vacuum pump typically shows as a hard brake pedal and loss of servo assistance, since the brakes lose their vacuum supply. It can also show as oil loss around the pump body where the seals have failed. Both point to renewing the pump.
What should be checked when fitting?
The pump is lubricated from the engine oil feed and returns oil to the cylinder head, so the mounting face and oil feed connection must be sealed correctly on fitting. A poor seal causes an oil leak or oil starvation, so renew the gasket and check the feed is clear.
