Frequently asked questions

What is the 7mm coil lead used for?
The 7mm coil lead, also called the king lead, is the high-tension ignition lead that carries spark voltage from the ignition coil to the distributor cap. It feeds the coil's secondary output into the distributor, which then sends it to the spark plug leads in firing order. Supplied as a 29in (737mm) length.
Where does the coil lead fit in the ignition system?
The coil lead connects between the ignition coil's output tower and the centre socket of the distributor cap. It sits at the heart of a distributor ignition system, carrying the full coil voltage. It's the single king lead feeding the distributor, separate from the individual spark plug leads.
Why does the length of the coil lead matter?
The coil lead is supplied as a 29in (737mm) 7mm HT lead, so the length matters for routing between the coil and distributor without strain. Check that your existing king lead measures close to 29in and uses 7mm HT cable before ordering, as coil-to-distributor distances vary by engine layout.
