Frequently asked questions

What does the self-levelling unit gaiter do?
The self-levelling unit gaiter is the protective rubber boot over the upper ball joint of the rear self-levelling suspension unit. It seals the joint against water, road dirt and grit, retaining the joint lubricant and preventing the contamination that would otherwise accelerate wear at the upper mounting.
Which Defender does this upper gaiter fit?
This upper gaiter fits the Land Rover Defender 110-inch wheelbase fitted with the rear self-levelling unit, from the 1995 model year onwards. It's specific to the upper ball joint of that suspension unit, so confirm your Defender has the self-levelling setup before ordering.
Why does the self-levelling gaiter need replacing?
The gaiter needs replacing once the rubber perishes, splits or tears, because a damaged boot lets water and grit reach the upper ball joint. That contamination washes out the lubricant and accelerates joint wear. Renewing a split gaiter early typically protects the self-levelling unit from costlier damage.
