De spanner handhaaft de juiste spanning op de aandrijfriem (multiriem) die de motoraccessoires aandrijft, door speling op te vangen zodat de riem de poelies zonder slippen vastgrijpt. De aandrijfindeling met airconditioning leidt de riem rond de extra A/C-compressorpoelie, en deze spanner is afgestemd op die configuratie.

Een versleten spanlager of zwakke veer zorgt ervoor dat de riem slipt, wat gepaard gaat met piepen, versnelde riemslijtage en verlies van de accessoireaandrijving.
