Het is de centrale eenheid van het stuursysteem, die de rotatie van het stuurwiel omzet in beweging van de stuurarm, die op de stuurkoppeling werkt om de wielen te draaien. Hydraulische druk, geleverd door de stuurbekrachtigingspomp, zorgt voor de bekrachtiging, waarbij de interne klep van het stuurhuis de stroom reguleert op basis van de stuurinspanning.
