Frequently asked questions

What is the rear coil spring used for on a Discovery 2?
The rear coil spring is a road spring in the coil-sprung rear suspension of the Land Rover Discovery 2 (1998-2004). It sits between the axle and the chassis spring seat, carrying the weight of the rear of the vehicle and setting ride height while the damper controls the motion.
Should rear coil springs be replaced in pairs?
Rear coil springs are best replaced as a pair on the Discovery 2. Each side takes one spring, and fitting two new springs keeps the rear sitting level and the spring rates matched. Replacing only one can leave the rear lopsided if the other has sagged.
What are the signs a rear coil spring needs replacing?
A sagged, cracked or broken rear coil spring lowers ride height, reduces load capacity and upsets handling on the Discovery 2. A broken spring can also rattle or cause an uneven rear stance. Check both springs together, since they typically age at a similar rate.
What's needed to fit a rear coil spring?
Fitting a rear coil spring on the Discovery 2 usually means supporting the axle and lowering it enough to free the spring from its seats. On the coil-sprung rear it can often be done without a spring compressor, unlike strut setups. It's typically a home job with axle stands and care.
