Frequently asked questions

What does the RTC3537G wheel bearing kit cover?
RTC3537G supplies the metric taper roller hub bearings for one wheel on a Series 3. The same kit serves front and rear hubs across short and long wheelbase vehicles. One kit does one hub, so the quantity you need depends on how many corners are being rebuilt.
Is my Series 3 metric or imperial?
Series 3 hubs went metric during 1980. Vehicles built from 1980 onward take RTC3537G, and anything earlier, including Series II and IIA, takes the imperial kit RTC3534G. Because it's a build date change rather than a model year change, check the chassis plate or measure the old bearings.
What else typically gets replaced with the hub bearings?
Hub seals normally go in with new bearings, and the stub axle and hub face are worth inspecting while everything is apart. Fresh grease packed into the bearing on assembly matters as much as the bearing itself. Hub bearings that fail early are usually under greased rather than faulty.
Can Series 3 hub bearings be changed at home?
Changing Series 3 hub bearings is within reach of a well equipped home workshop. The wheel, hub and drive flange come off, then old races are driven out and new ones driven in square. A bearing race driver set makes a real difference, and end float is set to the workshop manual specification.
What happens if hub bearing end float is wrong?
Wrong end float shortens bearing life quickly. Set too tight and the taper rollers run without clearance, overheat and pick up. Set too loose and the hub knocks, the seal wears and the brake drum runs out of true. The workshop manual specification exists for exactly this reason.
