Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC5048 starter motor brush kit used for?
The RTC5048 starter motor brush kit renews the carbon brushes inside the starter motor. The brushes carry current to the rotating armature through the commutator. As they shorten with use, the starter draws current less effectively and cranking slows.
Which vehicles and engines does this brush kit cover?
This brush kit covers the Land Rover Defender from 1987 to 2006 with the 2.25 petrol, 2.5 petrol or 3.5 V8 petrol engine, Discovery 1 from 1989 to 1998 with the 3.5 V8 petrol, and Range Rover Classic from 1986 to 1994 with the V8 in twin carburettor or EFI form.
Where do the brushes sit in the starter motor?
The brushes sit in the end housing of the starter motor, held against the commutator by springs. Getting to them means removing the starter from the engine and taking off the end cover. The starter doesn't need full disassembly for a brush change on most units.
Can starter brushes be replaced at home?
Replacing starter brushes is typically a home job once the starter is off the engine, needing hand tools and a soldering iron on units where the brush leads are soldered rather than screwed. Mark the housing position before separating it so the unit goes back together correctly.
Is it worth changing the brushes rather than the whole starter?
A brush kit is worth fitting when the starter turns slowly or intermittently but the armature, bushes and solenoid are sound. If the commutator is deeply grooved or the bushes are worn enough to let the armature touch the pole shoes, a replacement or rebuilt starter is the better route.
