Aangedreven door de motor, zuigt hij brandstof uit het toevoersysteem en levert deze met hoge druk, in de juiste hoeveelheid en met de juiste timing voor elke cilinder, aan de injectoren. De output regelt de brandstoftoevoer en de inspuittiming, en daarmee de motorprestaties, soepelheid en stabiliteit van het stationair toerental.

Als gereviseerde eenheid wordt hij gedemonteerd, opnieuw opgebouwd en gekalibreerd om de juiste interne toleranties en levering te herstellen.
