The rear differential pinion oil seal seals the driving pinion where the propshaft flange enters the rear diff housing. It keeps the differential oil in and water and dirt out around the rotating pinion shaft. On the Range Rover L322 it sits at the pinion nose on the rear axle.
How do I know the pinion oil seal needs replacing?
A failing pinion oil seal usually shows as oil weeping around the pinion nose or grime building up on the rear of the diff and the propshaft flange. Left unchecked the differential can lose oil and damage its gears. It's typically renewed whenever the pinion flange is disturbed.
