Het kanaal bekleedt de bovenrand van de raamopening en geleidt het portierglas wanneer het omhoog en omlaag wordt bewogen, houdt het glas stabiel tegen rammelen en dicht de bovenkant van de opening af tegen water en windgeruis. Het wordt vernieuwd wanneer de gevlokte bekleding verslijt of het rubber uithardt, waardoor het glas in het kozijn kan klapperen en tocht kan binnendringen.
