Frequently asked questions

What is the rear output shaft seal for?
This is the rear output shaft oil seal for the ZF 6HP26 and 6HP28 six-speed automatic transmission. It seals where the output shaft leaves the rear of the transmission housing on its way to the transfer box, retaining fluid and keeping dirt and water out of the extension housing.
How does this seal show it has failed?
A failure at this seal shows as fluid loss at the gearbox-to-transfer-box joint. If you are finding transmission fluid tracking from that junction, the rear output shaft seal is the usual cause and should be renewed.
When should it be replaced?
Renew this seal whenever the transfer box is separated from the transmission, since the seal is disturbed once the output shaft is exposed. Replacing it during transfer box or propshaft work avoids a repeat leak soon after reassembly.
Which vehicles does it fit?
This seal fits the ZF 6HP26/6HP28 auto in the Discovery 3 (2005-2009, to VIN 9A999999), Discovery 4 (2010-2016, from VIN AA000001), Range Rover L322 (2002-2012) and Range Rover Sport L320 (2005-2013). Use your VIN to confirm the Discovery 3 and 4 split.
