What is this Shim used for?

What's the difference between a carrier shim and a pinion shim?
This is a carrier bearing shim, it positions the crownwheel and sets the carrier bearing preload. A pinion shim instead sits behind the pinion bearing to set pinion height. Both are used in a Salisbury axle rebuild but they're not interchangeable.
