What is this Shim used for?
This shim sets the carrier (crownwheel) bearing preload in the Salisbury axle differential. It locates the crownwheel correctly relative to the pinion and is selected from a graded range of thicknesses during differential assembly.
What's the difference between a carrier shim and a pinion shim?
This is a carrier bearing shim, it positions the crownwheel and sets the carrier bearing preload. A pinion shim instead sits behind the pinion bearing to set pinion height. Both are used in a Salisbury axle rebuild but they're not interchangeable.
What thickness is this shim and how is it chosen?
This carrier shim is 0.010 in thick, one step in a graded range that lets you fine-tune crownwheel bearing preload. The correct thickness is measured and selected against your specific Salisbury axle build during setup, not by vehicle model.
