Frequently asked questions

What is the transmission brake drum and what does it do?
This is the transmission brake drum for the LT230 transfer box, the drum-type parking brake mounted on the transfer box rear output. It gives the friction surface the transmission brake shoes act on. It fits the Defender and Discovery 2 with the LT230 transfer box.
Where is the transmission brake drum located?
The drum sits on the transfer box rear output, clamped between the output flange and the rear propshaft, so the parking brake acts on the driveline rather than the wheels. That means it carries the full parking load through the transmission.
What are the signs the drum needs replacing?
A glazed, scored or worn transmission brake drum is a common reason the parking brake will not hold on a slope. Check the friction bore for scoring, ovality and heat cracking whenever the transmission brake shoes or the output flange oil seal are disturbed.
How do I confirm this drum fits my vehicle?
This drum fits the Defender from 1987 to 2016 (later Defenders from VIN 7A000001) and the Discovery 2 (1998-2004), all with the LT230 transfer box. Confirm your VIN and transfer box type against the fitment note before ordering.
