Frequently asked questions

What does the thermostat do on the 2.4 TDCi Defender?
It controls coolant flow through the radiator so the engine warms up quickly and then holds its running temperature. It sits in the housing on the engine and opens as coolant heats up. This one is for the 2.4 litre TDCi Puma engine.
What are the signs of a failed thermostat?
Stuck open, the engine takes a long time to warm up, the heater blows cool and fuel use rises. Stuck closed, temperature climbs quickly and the engine can overheat. Overheating on the 2.4 TDCi risks head gasket damage, so a suspect thermostat is worth replacing early.
What else should I replace when fitting this thermostat?
Renew the housing seal or gasket if your setup uses one, since it rarely seals properly twice. Drain and refill with the correct coolant rather than topping up, and bleed the system afterwards. Check the housing face for corrosion before fitting.
