Frequently asked questions

What is the valve collet used for?
The valve collet is a tapered locking piece for the K Series and KV6 petrol cylinder heads in the Freelander 1 (1996-2006). It wedges between the valve stem and the spring retainer, holding the valve spring under preload so the valve stays seated and controlled.
How many valve collets are needed for a job?
Valve collets work in pairs, with two locking each valve stem. A 16-valve K Series head therefore typically needs 32 collets for a full valve job. This part is supplied individually, so order the exact count your rebuild requires.
Can valve collets be reused?
Valve collets can sometimes be reused if the tapered faces and grooves show no wear or spreading, but fitting new ones during a head rebuild is common practice. A worn collet can let the retainer slip, dropping a valve into the cylinder and causing serious engine damage.
