Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC3537 wheel bearing kit for?
RTC3537 is the metric hub wheel bearing kit for Series 3, supplied as taper roller bearings for one wheel. It fits both front and rear hubs on short and long wheelbase vehicles. Metric refers to the bearing sizing Land Rover moved to during Series 3 production.
Which Series 3 vehicles need the metric kit?
Series 3 vehicles built from 1980 onward use metric hub bearings, in both short and long wheelbase form. Earlier Series II, IIA and Series 3 up to June 1980 use imperial bearings and need RTC3534G instead. The changeover is a build date, not a model year.
How many kits does a full wheel bearing job need?
RTC3537 covers one wheel, so four kits are needed for all four hubs. Bearings are normally renewed in axle pairs as a minimum, since both sides have covered the same mileage. Fit fresh hub seals at the same time so the new taper rollers stay properly packed.
What are the signs Series 3 wheel bearings are worn?
Worn hub bearings usually show as a rumble that rises with road speed, noticeable play when rocking the wheel top to bottom, and grease escaping past the hub seal. On a live axle Series 3 a neglected bearing also wears the stub axle and hub, turning a cheap job into an expensive one.
How are taper roller hub bearings set up on fitting?
Taper roller hub bearings need their end float set on assembly rather than simply being torqued down. The hub nut is tightened then backed off to the workshop manual specification so the bearing runs with the correct clearance. Too tight and the bearing overheats, too loose and the hub knocks.
