Frequently asked questions

What is the KAM542 crown wheel and pinion set for?

It's a 4.1:1 ratio crown wheel and pinion for the rear differential, long nose diff configuration, forming the final drive stage that transmits drive from the propshaft to the halfshafts through 90 degrees.

Do I need to fit KAM542 with a matching front ratio?

Yes. Front and rear differentials must run the same ratio, so if you're fitting KAM542 at the rear, fit KAM541 at the front to keep both axles matched at 4.1:1.

Is this a direct swap for the standard differential internals?

No, it's a lapped matched pair that must be fitted as a set, with pinion depth, bearing preload, and backlash set on installation rather than transferred from the old components.

Which vehicles use the KAM542 rear crown wheel and pinion?

Fits the Defender, Discovery 1 (1989-1998), Discovery 2 (1998-2004), and Range Rover Classic (1970-1994) rear axle, long nose differential, at 4.1:1.
