Deze is in de uitlaatpijp voor de katalysator geschroefd en meet het zuurstofgehalte van het uitlaatgas. Dit rapporteert hij aan de ECU van het motormanagement. The Front Oxygen Sensor is the upstream (pre-catalyst) lambda sensor in the exhaust. Threaded into the downpipe ahead of the catalytic converter, it measures the oxygen in the exhaust gas and reports to the ECU, which trims fuelling in closed-loop to hold the air/fuel mixture at the correct ratio.
