Frequently asked questions

What is the 245261 carburettor damper and what does it do?
The 245261 carburettor damper fits into the top of the SU carburettor dashpot on Land Rover Series 2, 2A and 3 petrol engines. It gives hydraulic resistance to the suction piston when you open the throttle quickly, preventing a weak mixture and the flat spot that causes hesitation.
Where does the carburettor damper sit?
The carburettor damper sits in the top of the dashpot, also called the suction chamber, on the SU carburettor. The damper rod hangs down into the oil-filled well in the piston. It belongs to the fuel and induction system on Series petrol Land Rovers.
Why does my engine hesitate without the carburettor damper?
Without the carburettor damper, or with too little oil in the dashpot, the suction piston rises too fast when you open the throttle. That typically leans the mixture and causes a flat spot or stumble on acceleration. The damper controls that piston movement to keep pull-away smooth.
Does the carburettor damper need oil to work?
Yes, the carburettor damper needs the dashpot kept topped up with the oil specified in your workshop manual. The damper rod relies on that oil to resist piston movement. Run it dry and you'll usually get the same flat spot as a missing damper. Check the level when servicing the SU carburettor.
