Frequently asked questions

What does the inlet air seal do?
The inlet air seal seals the joint between the air intake and the carburettor inlet on the 2.25 litre petrol induction system. It keeps an airtight induction path so unfiltered air can't bypass the intake, protecting the engine from unmetered air and dust.
Which Land Rovers use this inlet air seal?
This inlet air seal fits the Land Rover Series 2 and 2a (1958-1968) on the Solex carburettor connection for the 2.25 petrol engine. It's also used on the Defender (1987-2006) as the raised air intake seal for the 2.5 TDi and four cylinder raised intake assemblies.
What happens if the inlet air seal fails?
A failed inlet air seal lets unfiltered air and dust bypass the intake, which can lean the mixture and cause poor running or accelerated engine wear. Perished or cracked seals are common on older Land Rovers, so renew it whenever the intake or carburettor is disturbed.
Should the seal be replaced when removed?
Replace the inlet air seal whenever the carburettor or air intake is removed. Rubber and composite seals harden and take a set with age and heat, so a used seal rarely reseals properly. A new seal keeps the induction joint airtight.
