Gemonteerd op de tussenas, grijpt dit tandwiel in elkaar met het eerste-versnelling tandwiel op de hoofdas om de laagste voorwaartse verhouding van de versnellingsbak te bieden. De tussenas wordt constant aangedreven door het ingaande tandwiel, en dit tandwiel brengt de aandrijving over naar de hoofdas wanneer de eerste versnelling wordt gekozen.
