Frequently asked questions

What is the 556040 layshaft used for?
The 556040 layshaft is the countershaft of the manual gearbox on the Land Rover Series 2 and 3. It carries the constant-mesh gear cluster that transmits drive from the input shaft down to the mainshaft gear train.
How does this layshaft differ from the earlier type it replaces?
This is the later shouldered layshaft. It retains second gear against a machined shoulder rather than a circlip groove, giving greater strength than the earlier circlip-retained design it supersedes.
What are the signs a gearbox layshaft needs replacing?
Worn or pitted layshaft gear teeth typically cause gearbox whine, difficulty selecting gears or jumping out of gear. The layshaft is usually inspected and replaced during a full gearbox rebuild.
