The Retainer is the gearbox detent spring retainer plate on the Land Rover Series 2, 2A and 3. It locates and holds the detent spring that loads the selector plunger against the selector shaft, keeping the spring tension that holds the selected gear engaged and gives the gearchange its positive feel.

Does this retainer fit both sides of the gearbox?

This retainer is the nearside, left-hand plate only on the Series 2, 2A and 3 gearbox. It isn't the offside fitting, so confirm you need the nearside detent retainer before ordering. It suits both the 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder models.
