Frequently asked questions

What is the exhaust valve and what does it do?
The exhaust valve seals the exhaust port of the 3.5L V8 petrol engine during compression and combustion, then opens to release spent gases into the exhaust manifold. Fitted to the Range Rover Classic V8, it runs hotter than the inlet valve and seats against the exhaust valve seat in the cylinder head.
Why do exhaust valves fail and what are the signs?
Exhaust valves typically fail through burning, pitting or recession of the valve face, since they run very hot on the 3.5L V8. Loss of compression on a cylinder, a misfire, or tapping from the head usually point to a valve problem. A burnt exhaust valve left unchecked can damage the seat and head.
How many are needed and which engine does this fit?
This exhaust valve fits the 3.5L V8 carburettor engine built to the 8.25:1 compression ratio, as used on the Range Rover Classic. A V8 uses eight exhaust valves in total, one per cylinder, so a full head overhaul typically needs eight. Confirm your engine's compression specification before ordering, since other builds can use different valves.
