Frequently asked questions

What is this Shim used for?
This shim sets the pinion height and preload in the Salisbury axle differential. It fits behind the pinion bearing and is selected from a graded range of thicknesses to position the pinion correctly against the crown wheel during assembly.
How do I know which shim thickness to fit?
Shim thickness is chosen during differential setup to set correct pinion height, not by vehicle model. This shim is 0.005 in thick, one step in a graded range, so the right thickness depends on measuring the pinion mesh on your specific Salisbury axle build.
Can the shim be reused?
This shim can typically be reused if it's undamaged and the same thickness is still correct for the setup. But pinion height is usually reset whenever the bearings are renewed, so the correct thickness is normally selected fresh during a Salisbury axle rebuild.
